Day 11 of Our 22-Day Unity Challenge: Lamed (ל) — Authority, Tongue, and Teaching

Welcome to Day 11 of our journey toward unity in the Body of Christ!
Each day, we are counting backward through the Hebrew alphabet — preparing our hearts for the global gathering of prayer and reconciliation on September 22, 2025. Today we arrive at Lamed, the 12th letter, a symbol of authority, teaching, and the discipline of the tongue.

What is Lamed?

Lamed (ל) literally means “to learn” and “to teach.” Its tall, upward form rises above the other letters, symbolizing authority, instruction, and the shepherd’s staff — a rod used both for guidance and correction.

Scripture reminds us: “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.” (Proverbs 29:15). In the same way, unity in the Body requires loving discipline, both over our words and within our relationships.

The tongue is one of the smallest parts of the body, yet it wields great authority. James warns: “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.” (James 3:9–10). Lamed calls us to repent of misused words and to realign our tongues under the authority of Christ.

Lamed and the Body

Think of the human body:
• The head gives instruction.
• The spine carries authority and balance.
• The tongue directs and expresses.

When any part goes rogue, disorder spreads. The same is true in the Body of Christ. Leaders must exercise authority with humility. Members must use their tongues to build up, not tear down. Teaching must flow from the Spirit, not ego.

Repentance restores alignment, bringing the Body back under Christ, the true Head.

Why Focus on Authority and Tongue for Unity?
• In personal life: Authority begins with self-control — reigning in our own words.
• In community: Teaching must unify, not divide; authority must guide, not dominate.
• In mission: A united Body speaks with one voice, bearing faithful witness to the nations.

In the reverse alphabet story of redemption, Lamed follows Mem. After the waters of repentance flow, we must learn to speak, teach, and exercise authority rightly, or the stream becomes muddied again.

Our Day 11 Challenge: Bring the Tongue Under Authority
• Reflect: Where have your words brought division rather than life?
• Repent: Ask God to forgive careless or harsh speech and to retrain your tongue.
• Reconcile: Use your words today to bless someone you’ve wronged or to affirm someone you’ve overlooked.

Our Prayer

Lord, You are the true Teacher and Shepherd. Forgive us for misusing authority or letting our tongues sow division. Bring our words under Your authority and teach us to speak with wisdom, humility, and love. Align us as one Body, with Christ as the Head, so that our teaching and authority may build unity and reveal Your glory. Amen.
