Day 20 of Our 22-Day Unity Challenge: Gimmel (Χ’) β€” The Lifting Up

Welcome to Day 20 of our journey of repentance and unity as we count backward through the Hebrew alphabet, preparing for the great gathering on September 22, 2025. Today we reach the third letter: Gimmel (Χ’). Small in form, yet overflowing with meaning, Gimmel carries the picture of movement, generosity, and lifting up.

What is Gimmel?

The word Gimmel comes from gemul, which means reward, giving, or lifting up. Its shape has been seen as a person walking or runningβ€”moving toward another in generosity.

Lifting Up: Gimmel reflects the act of raising β€” lifting our hands in prayer, lifting others who have fallen, or lifting our eyes to heaven. True unity comes when we lift together. Generosity and Provision: Jewish tradition teaches that Gimmel is the benefactor, moving toward the Dalet (the β€œpoor man”) to offer aid. It is a picture of grace in motion. Number Three: With a value of three, Gimmel points us to completeness in covenant β€” the three patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob), the three pilgrimage feasts, and the third day when resurrection power broke forth from the tomb. Camel of Burden: Some see Gimmel in the image of a camel (gamal) β€” able to carry heavy loads and sustain long journeys. Unity requires that we bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2).

Gimmel and Unity

Gimmel reminds us: unity is never passive. It moves. It gives. It lifts.

In a divided world, God calls us to walk toward each other with mercy, not away in pride.

When we lift our hands in repentance, we rise together.

When we lift the weak, we become strong.

When we lift our voices in prayer, we become one Body.

Gimmel teaches that the journey of repentance is not only about what we lay down but also about what we choose to lift up.

Why Gimmel for Repentance and Redemption?

Repentance walks toward others: We cannot reconcile from a distance; we must move toward the one we wronged. Redemption lifts the lowly: God stoops to raise us; so must we lift those around us. Unity bears burdens together: Just as the camel carries heavy loads, so must the Church carry one another in love.

Our Day 20 Challenge: Lift to Unite

Reflect: Who around me is weighed down, waiting for me to lift them in prayer or encouragement?

Repent: Where have I withheld generosity β€” my time, attention, or forgiveness?

Reconcile: Take one step of lifting today β€” raise someone’s name in prayer, share a burden, or reach out to lift a relationship that’s grown heavy.

Our Prayer

Lord, teach us to be a Gimmel people β€” generous, moving toward others, lifting what is heavy. Let our hands rise in prayer, our arms strengthen the weak, and our steps carry us toward reconciliation. May the lifting up of our voices join in one chorus, preparing the way for the return of our King. Amen.

We are nearing the King’s return β€” each letter chiseling our hearts, each day lifting us closer to His presence.
