✝️ Devotional: When the Road Leads to a Prison Cell

“Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” — Luke 7:19 (NIV)

Following Jesus doesn’t always lead to comfort, clarity, or rescue. Just ask John the Baptist—the fiery prophet who prepared the way for the Messiah, only to find himself imprisoned, wondering if he got it all wrong.

His question was raw and real:
“Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

This was the same John who baptized Jesus and saw heaven open. But now, with shackles on his wrists and silence from the sky, doubt crept in. The Messiah was supposed to bring justice—not just healing. And yet, in his moment of darkness, John didn’t curse God—he sent his question directly to Jesus.

And Jesus? He didn’t rebuke him. He reminded him.

“Go back and report what you’ve seen…” (Luke 7:22)
The blind see. The lame walk. The dead live. The poor are loved.

“Blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” (Luke 7:23)

Sometimes Jesus doesn’t give explanations. He gives evidence—of His mercy, His power, and His goodness, even when the story doesn’t unfold the way we expect.

Reflection Questions

Takeaway

This week, bring your questions to Jesus. Let go of the pressure to have it all figured out. Trust that even when the road leads to unexpected places, He is still the One.

Prayer

Jesus, sometimes I don’t understand what You’re doing. Like John, I struggle with unmet expectations and silent seasons. But I choose to trust You anyway. Remind me of Your faithfulness. Show me the quiet evidence of Your presence. Strengthen my belief in the dark. I still believe You are the One. Amen.
