Luke 24 takes place on Resurrection Sunday, the same day the women found the empty tomb. Two disciples \u2014 one named Cleopas (likely the husband of Mary, mentioned in John 19:25) and an unnamed companion \u2014 are walking from Jerusalem to a small village called Emmaus (about 7 miles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
walking along heartbroken and confused, talking about how Jesus had been killed, and they didn\u2019t know what to make of the women\u2019s story that the tomb was empty and that Jesus might be alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus appears beside them, but they are kept from recognizing Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This moment is one of the most intimate resurrection encounters\u2014Jesus meets two ordinary disciples in their confusion and disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Passage (Luke 24:25\u201327)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 25 He said to them, \u201cHow foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!<\/p>\n\n\n\n 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Historical & Jewish Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 1. The Expectation of a Warrior-Messiah<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most Jews in the first century believed the Messiah would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n free them from Roman oppression restore the kingdom of Israel defeat their enemies rule in glory<\/p>\n\n\n\n They expected a Davidic king, not a suffering servant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To them, the cross meant Jesus failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Why Jesus Rebukes Them (\u201cFoolish and Slow to Believe\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus isn\u2019t insulting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is revealing something deeper:<\/p>\n\n\n\n They believed some of Scripture, but not all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They accepted the glory prophecies (like Isaiah 9, Daniel 7),<\/p>\n\n\n\n but ignored the suffering prophecies (like Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Zechariah 12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n This selective reading is what blinded them to God\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. The Jewish Way of Reading Scripture<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Judaism, Scripture (Tanakh) is divided into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Torah (Moses) Nevi\u2019im (Prophets) Ketuvim (Writings)<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Jesus says \u201cMoses and all the Prophets,\u201d He is saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The entire Hebrew Bible points to Me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the ultimate Christ-centered hermeneutic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Verse-by-Verse Explanation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Verse 25 \u2014 \u201cHow foolish you are\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus reveals that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n their problem isn\u2019t lack of information\u2014it\u2019s lack of belief they had the Scriptures, but they misunderstood the story<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their vision was shaped more by cultural expectations than divine revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Verse 26 \u2014 \u201cDid not the Messiah have to suffer\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The phrase \u201chave to\u201d (dei) means divine necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is teaching: suffering was not an accident it was not defeat it was God\u2019s plan from the beginning<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prophecies like Psalm 22 \u2014 pierced hands and feet Isaiah 53 \u2014 wounded, crushed, punished Zechariah 12 \u2014 \u201cthey will look on the one they pierced\u201d Genesis 3:15 \u2014 the serpent would strike His heel<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross wasn\u2019t the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cross was the path to glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Verse 27 \u2014 \u201cBeginning with Moses and all the Prophets\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here Jesus gives the greatest Bible study in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He interprets every major theme through Himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moses The Passover lamb The serpent lifted up The manna The rock struck to give water The Tabernacle sacrifices The promise of a coming prophet like Moses The Prophets Isaiah\u2019s suffering servant Jeremiah\u2019s righteous Branch Daniel\u2019s Son of Man Zechariah\u2019s pierced Shepherd Jonah\u2019s 3 days in the fish (Jesus cites this elsewhere)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus presents the entire Old Testament as a unified story about Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Theological Meaning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus is the center of Scripture. The Bible is not primarily about Israel, morality, or prophecy \u2014 it\u2019s about Jesus. Suffering precedes glory. For Christ \u2014 and for every disciple. Faith grows through Scripture. Jesus could have revealed Himself instantly, but instead \u2014 He taught Scripture first. Recognizing Jesus requires spiritual eyes. Knowledge alone can\u2019t reveal Him; revelation does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why This Moment Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is the turning point of resurrection faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Emmaus disciples go from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n crushed to joyful confused to enlightened hopeless to burning with revelation<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWere not our hearts burning within us\u2026 as He opened the Scriptures to us?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n This story shows that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus pursues the discouraged He walks with us in confusion He reveals Himself through Scripture He turns disappointment into mission<\/p>\n\n\n\n Application for Today<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n 1. We often miss Jesus because expectations blind us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We expect Him to work in a certain way \u2014 and when He doesn\u2019t, we feel abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. We need the whole counsel of Scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not just the hopeful parts; also the hard, refining truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. Jesus still walks with the disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Emmaus is the story of heartbreak healed through the presence of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4.
