Churches, Seven Invitations<\/h1>\n<p class=\"subtitle\">A place to begin when faith feels tired, distracted, or farther away than it used to be<\/p>\n<p class=\"byline\"><time datetime=\"2026-09-28\">September 28, 2026<\/time> \u00b7 Jason Tomlinson<\/p><\/header>\n<p class=\"prose\">Some days you open the Bible to learn something. Other days you open it because the day has taken nearly everything and you need somewhere to set down what is left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">I know both kinds of day. My working life has included budgets and forecasts for other people. I know how to stay busy in ways that look like devotion. You can answer every message and remember what everyone else needs, yet go months without noticing that God has become a topic rather than a person you talk to. Stepping back does not automatically fix that. The quiet has questions of its own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Revelation opens with a scene that is easy to skip on the way to the dragons and trumpets. John sees Jesus among seven golden lampstands, and Jesus explains what they are: \u201cthe seven lampstands are the seven churches\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+1%3A20&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 1:20<\/a>). Before the visions that make this book feel hard, Christ is in the middle of His people, speaking to what is actually happening among them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The letters do not all sound alike. Smyrna and Philadelphia receive encouragement without rebuke. Elsewhere, Christ calls for repentance, yet warning and promise often stand together. Let each letter speak before deciding what you need to hear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Below are seven free Bible studies from our GMS library, each paired with one letter as a devotional companion. These pairings are not the meaning of the lampstands or a way to sort people into spiritual types. Read the passage first. Notice where it lands. Jesus says this to a church He has just praised for its hard work, endurance, and refusal to accept false teachers. Ephesus has not stopped working. The trouble is inside the effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">I recognize that church. The chairs get stacked, the email gets answered, and nobody is let down. Somewhere in the middle of doing everything that needed doing, you stop enjoying the people you were doing it for. The person who used to be a joy becomes a line item. Being right starts to matter more than being kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Jesus calls them to remember, repent, and return to their earlier deeds. Love must become visible again. We do not have to wait until we feel ready to begin treating someone with care. And the letter ends with a promise of life in God\u2019s presence, pictured in the tree of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">That response might mean listening to the person you have grown short with, praying without planning your next task, or admitting that you have been managing people instead of loving them. The examination happens inside the responsibilities you already have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>The Cross of Selfless Leadership<\/em> reads the Ten Commandments over ten days through love for God and love for neighbor. It opens with grace rather than a demand to prove yourself, then examines allegiance, speech, and the effect our choices have on others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The next step may be smaller than you think. Give one person your full attention today instead of whatever attention is left over.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">Where has my love for God or for people cooled while my work kept running?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/cross\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin The Cross of Selfless Leadership<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"smyrna\" aria-labelledby=\"smyrna-heading\"><h2 id=\"smyrna-heading\"><span class=\"church-name\">Smyrna<\/span>When the hard place has not ended<\/h2>\n<p class=\"passage\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+2%3A8-11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 2:8\u201311<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">There is no rebuke in this letter. Jesus tells Smyrna, \u201cI know your afflictions and your poverty\u201d (Revelation 2:9). The believers are already suffering. He warns that some will face imprisonment and calls them to faithfulness even in the face of death, with the promise of life beyond what their enemies can take.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">I do not want to shrink their persecution down to a rough week at work. But there is something here for anyone who has prayed hard, slept badly, and woken to find the same trouble sitting where they left it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The appointment is still on the calendar. The answer has not come. You manage the next necessary thing, but your mind keeps circling back to what happens afterward. Another \u201cdon\u2019t worry\u201d gives you very little to hold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>Anxious Sheep, Faithful Shepherd<\/em> moves slowly on purpose. Seven days in Psalm 23, one line at a time. It does not claim that a week of reading will end your anxiety. What it does is give the fear an address. On Day 5, \u201cYou Are with Me,\u201d you are asked to name your own valley and begin a prayer with the words \u201cYou are with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Those words leave the situation unfinished. You do not have to make the valley sound less frightening before bringing it to the Shepherd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Today, you may need care more than an explanation. Let the psalm lend you words while yours are hard to find.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">Where do I need the Shepherd\u2019s care while the trouble is still going on?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/psalm23\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin Anxious Sheep, Faithful Shepherd<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"pergamum\" aria-labelledby=\"pergamum-heading\"><h2 id=\"pergamum-heading\"><span class=\"church-name\">Pergamum<\/span>When something wrong starts to feel normal<\/h2>\n<p class=\"passage\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+2%3A12-17&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 2:12\u201317<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The first time, it bothered you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Maybe it was an explanation you knew was untrue, a joke at someone\u2019s expense, or the way a useful person was allowed to treat others badly. You noticed. Later, you found yourself making allowances. Eventually, you stopped expecting anything different. I have watched that sequence in boardrooms and church foyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Pergamum had held on to Jesus amid serious opposition. Antipas, whom Jesus calls His faithful witness, had been killed. Yet some within the church held to teaching that led toward idolatry and sexual immorality. Jesus called for repentance. Their courage under pressure was real; it did not give them permission to stop listening elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>From Aleph to Tav<\/em> walks through Revelation over twenty-two days, with one chapter and a Hebrew-letter reflection each day. Christ stays in view rather than a timetable to crack. Several days address discernment: the stories shaping our hearts, the compromises we excuse, and the cost of naming something after we have benefited from leaving it unnamed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The goal is not suspicion. Nobody needs to become the person who sees a heresy under every chair. We need the willingness to say what is true to the people who need to hear it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Start small. Stop repeating the version of the story you know is unfair. Correct the account you made sound better than it was. Where setting something right is complicated, ask someone wise to help you do it safely and honestly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">What compromise have I justified because everyone around me makes it?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/aleph\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin From Aleph to Tav<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"thyatira\" aria-labelledby=\"thyatira-heading\"><h2 id=\"thyatira-heading\"><span class=\"church-name\">Thyatira<\/span>When good work becomes a reason not to look<\/h2>\n<p class=\"passage\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+2%3A18-29&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 2:18\u201329<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Thyatira receives a striking report: love, faith, service, perseverance, and \u201cyou are now doing more than you did at first\u201d (Revelation 2:19).<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Yet the church tolerates a teacher whom Jesus calls Jezebel, who is leading people into idolatry and sexual immorality. He speaks as the one who searches hearts and minds. Good work does not make wrongdoing safe to leave alone. He also recognizes those who have not followed that teaching and calls them to hold on to what they have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">This is a serious correction. We can use a quieter version of the same reasoning when a ministry\u2019s success becomes an excuse to dismiss concerns. A leader has given so much, so a troubling pattern goes unchallenged. In our own lives, we hold up everything we are doing well whenever someone suggests that something needs to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>Built to Hold<\/em> spends twenty days on the person underneath the service, adapted from our 20-Day Journey. Its practices include listening, humility, steadiness, faithfulness, and receiving correction. The concern is what comes out of us when we are hurried, criticized, or afraid\u2014not only what we know when life is calm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">A word of care: self-examination does not replace addressing wrongdoing or protecting someone who is being harmed. Looking honestly at yourself does not make you responsible for harm done to you. Believing the best never requires ignoring danger. If someone is being hurt, their protection comes first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Where someone has offered honest correction, we can make room to hear it instead of preparing the same defense.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">What have I been excusing because so much else in my service looks good?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/formation\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin Built to Hold<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"sardis\" aria-labelledby=\"sardis-heading\"><h2 id=\"sardis-heading\"><span class=\"church-name\">Sardis<\/span>When faithfulness keeps getting rescheduled<\/h2>\n<p class=\"passage\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+3%3A1-6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 3:1\u20136<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Years of planning cycles have taught me how comfortable tomorrow can become. We will make the call once the week settles. We will return to prayer when mornings are quieter. We will deal with what we already know as soon as we understand what comes next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Sardis had a good name. Jesus says so, then finishes the sentence: \u201cyou have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead\u201d (Revelation 3:1). His instructions come quickly. Wake up. Strengthen what remains. Remember what you received. Hold to it. Repent. He also sees those who have remained faithful and promises that they will walk with Him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">This is not a letter to someone who needs more sleep, and a better calendar will not answer it. Sardis needs to respond to Christ, not live on its reputation. The warning about His unexpected arrival makes that response urgent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>God\u2019s Cosmic Calendar<\/em> explores God\u2019s timing over fourteen days, with attention to rest, hope, and present responsibilities. One day confronts the temptation to chase predictions while ordinary promises go unkept. The connection with Sardis is watchful faithfulness, not a timetable for Christ\u2019s return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">When the coming year takes up so much room in your head that today gets almost none, begin with what is already clear. You do not need certainty about next year to keep one promise this afternoon. The person waiting for your reply lives in the present. So does the task you keep meaning to begin.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">What plain responsibility have I let slide while waiting to feel sure about the future?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/cosmic\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin God\u2019s Cosmic Calendar<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"philadelphia\" aria-labelledby=\"philadelphia-heading\"><h2 id=\"philadelphia-heading\"><span class=\"church-name\">Philadelphia<\/span>When your strength is small<\/h2>\n<p class=\"passage\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+3%3A7-13&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 3:7\u201313<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">A church can have people so dependable that nobody thinks to ask how they are doing. They remember the hospital visit. They cover the gap on the schedule. They make the hard phone call and return the next morning looking much as they always look. Because their tiredness rarely interrupts anything, it is easy to miss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Jesus has no rebuke for Philadelphia. He says, \u201cI know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word\u201d (Revelation 3:8). He has set an open door before them and calls them to hold on to what they have. His promise includes lasting belonging: a pillar in God\u2019s temple that never has to leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The letter says nothing about how Philadelphia divided its work. But it keeps us from treating limited strength as evidence of failed faith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>Tired Hands, Held Up<\/em> is Michael Abrokwah\u2019s twelve-day study for people who love the church and are worn out from carrying it. It distinguishes personal struggles from burdens that have been shared badly. It begins with a reminder tired workers may need to hear: your place in the Body does not depend on what you do for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Day 1 does not ask you for a plan to fix the ministry. It asks you to tell one person what you are carrying and let someone stand beside you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">You may be used to offering that kindness. Receiving it can feel strange. That is a fine place to start.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">What am I carrying that I have not told anyone about?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/loadbearing\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin Tired Hands, Held Up<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"laodicea\" aria-labelledby=\"laodicea-heading\"><h2 id=\"laodicea-heading\"><span class=\"church-name\">Laodicea<\/span>When we have stopped noticing our need<\/h2>\n<p class=\"passage\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Revelation+3%3A14-22&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 3:14\u201322<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Laodicea believes it has enough. Jesus exposes needs the church cannot see in itself. He offers gold refined by fire, white clothes, and salve for its eyes. The rebuke is sharp, but He says it comes from love. He calls for repentance and offers fellowship, pictured as sharing a meal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">The familiar picture of Jesus at the door belongs here, in a letter to a church. His invitation is not addressed only to people who have never heard His name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">I find that uncomfortable because I know the words too. You can know when to stand, what to say, and how to explain your beliefs, yet bring almost none of your actual life into the conversation. Familiarity makes it awkward to admit that you still have questions. It also hides the questions you stopped asking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\"><strong>A study to walk with you:<\/strong> <em>Come and See<\/em> is an eight-day pilot that starts at the beginning: who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him. It welcomes the curious and skeptical, but also someone who has believed for decades without examining the basics. No previous church experience is assumed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Starting again does not erase what came before. It may mean reading a familiar passage without assuming you already know what it asks of you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Bring the question you have never said aloud. Bring the part of your life that has stayed politely separate from your faith. Neither needs to be dressed in language more certain than you are.<\/p>\n<div class=\"response\"><span class=\"q-label\">One question to carry<\/span><p class=\"question\">Where am I living as though I do not need what only Jesus can give?<\/p><a class=\"study-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gmscharity.org\/bible-studies\/?lang=en#\/s\/come\/d\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Begin Come and See \u2014 Pilot Study<\/a><\/div><\/section>\n<section id=\"begin\" aria-labelledby=\"begin-heading\"><h2 id=\"begin-heading\">Begin with the part you recognized<\/h2>\n<p class=\"prose\">If one section made you slow down, stay there a while. You do not have to decide which church is yours, and you do not have to finish seven studies before responding to one letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">Read that letter in full. Let its encouragement or correction settle before turning it into a lesson for someone else. Then open the study, read Day 1, and carry its question into your day. Take the action that is yours to take. Ask for help where you need it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">There are still things in Revelation I do not understand. You may have questions too. We can return to them without putting off what is already clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose\">At the beginning, Jesus was among the churches. Keep that picture as you begin. You are not reading these letters to find a label for yourself. You are making room to hear Him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"prose prayer\">Lord Jesus, help me hear what I have been avoiding and receive the care I have been refusing. Show me what needs to change. Give me courage to respond, and someone trustworthy to walk beside me.
