According to Deadline, a new image of Johnny Depp in his role as Louis XV in the period drama Jeanne du Barry, which was directed by French actor and director Mawenn, has been released. Depp can be seen in the new image, which is in the style of a portrait, holding a sword and wearing a ruby around his neck. Both of these accessories were popular during the reign of Louis XV. In addition to her role as director, Mawenn also plays the title role of the courtesan in the film. Mawenn not only starred in and directed the movie Jeanne du Barry, but she also wrote the screenplay for the movie with Teddy Lussi-Modeste. This is Jeanne du Barry Mawenn’s most ambitious production to date. She has directed six full-length films before, including the documentary-style feature film Polisse (2011), which won the Cannes 2011 Jury Prize and starred Joeystarr, Karin Viard, Marina Fos, and Nicolas Duvauchelle. Her 2015 romantic drama My King featured Vincent Cassel, Emmanuelle Bercot, Louis Garrel, and Isild Le Besco, and was also directed by her. At Cannes in 2015, the jury awarded the prize for Best Actress to Bercot, who had been nominated by My King.
The production of Jeanne du Barry kicked off on July 26 and ran for a total of 11 weeks, during which time it filmed scenes both inside and outside of the studio. Some of the scenes were shot in Versailles, while others were shot in other areas of Paris. Pascal Caucheteux and Grégoire Sorlat, both of Why Not Productions, will take on the role of executive producers. Additionally, France Télévisions and IN2 will be producing. Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupaud, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair are some of the other actors that will be appearing in the film alongside Johnny Depp and Mai Wen.
The historical romance is based on the life of Jeanne du Barry, Louis XV’s last royal mistress at the Court of Versailles after Madame de Pompadour. Jeanne du Barry was a young woman from the working class who had a voracious appetite for both culture and pleasure. She was the illegitimate daughter of a seamstress and was born into poverty. With her wits and good looks, she quickly rises through the ranks of 18th-century Parisian society and the Court of Louis XV at Versailles. Even though Louis XV doesn’t know she’s a courtesan, she quickly becomes his favorite companion and is largely responsible for giving him a renewed interest in life. They soon fall deeply in love, and Jeanne moves to Versailles despite the fact that her presence there would cause a scandal at the court.
On the big screen, Johnny Depp was most recently seen in Minamata, alongside Katherine Jenkins and Bill Nighy. He became famous for his portrayals in movies such as the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Willy Wonka, and Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the movie based on Hunter S. Thompson’s 1971 book of the same name, starred him, and he was also in other cult classics.
