Being a writer sucks. Financially, unfortunately! Especially when you are just starting. It’s not at all glamorous. Sure, it can be fun and exciting, but it can also be hard work.
Here are six things that you should know about being a writer.
- You have to be willing to put in the work:
If you want to be a writer, you have to be willing to put in the work. That means sitting down at your computer or notebook and writing, even when you don’t feel like it. It means getting feedback from beta readers and editors and making changes to your work. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.
- You have to be patient:
Writing takes time. A lot of time. You can’t expect to sit down and write a novel in a week. It takes months, sometimes even years, to write a book. So, you have to be patient.
- You have to be resilient:
Writing is full of rejections. You will get rejections from agents, from publishers, and from readers. It’s just part of the business. But you can’t let those rejections get you down. You have to be resilient and keep going.
- You have to be flexible:
Things change. Plans change. Ideas change. As a writer, you have to be flexible and be able to roll with the punches.
- You have to be thick-skinned:
Not everyone is going to like your work. Some people are going to hate it. And that’s okay. You can’t take it personally. You must be thick-skinned and understand that not everyone will like your writing.
- You have to be passionate:
If you’re not passionate about writing, it will be very difficult to succeed. Writing is hard work, and it’s not always fun. But if you’re passionate about it, you’ll find a way to make it work.
