What is a Thousand Years in Gods Sight?

2 Peter 3:8 that says, “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”.

How long is a day in God’s time? The answer is that no one knows except God. God is outside time. He is infinite being, and boundless. God’s thinking is rarely different from ours.  One perfect example that fits  in  is in 2 Peter 3:8 that says, “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”.

If we read between the lines, the scripture is not meant to be viewed literally but figuratively. It is a figure of speech,” simile” which uses “like” that compares a day to a thousand years. A simile involves comparison of one thing with another, (e.g. “a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”. The word day, which means “yom” in Hebrew that is contrasted to a thousand years seem humanly impossible to fathom. However, in God’s realm, it is indeed possible. This means that time does not exist in God’s dominion because God is the creator of time itself and so to speak, God is outside of time. Though the context in 2 Peter 3:8 is about Jesus Christ’s second coming, one cannot ignore the fact that this scripture also figuratively illustrates that God is not bound by time.  If a day with God is a thousand years and a thousand years is a day, what is it for us? This concludes that God is not affected by time.

A similar verse that can pinpoint this reasoning is quoted in Psalm 90:4 which says, “For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. According to Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Moses wrote this Psalm at the end of 40 days of wilderness wanderings and of seeing an entire generation wiped away in the wilderness, including members of his own family. In this scripture, Moses chronicled God’s timelessness where he compared God’s time as a watch in the night.

A thousand years for God is perhaps an hour or a day or a minute.  But who knows? God is God. He is what he is. He will never in a hurry and he’s always on time.

Time itself is something only God can tell. He is the beginning. He is the end. He is the alpha and the Omega. Who can question his timings? Who can control his time? How long is a day in God’s time? This is an irrelevant question in God’s mind because God is infinite and endless.
